Leslie Caldwell

Leslie's Story

For many years, Leslie has been struggling with mental illness. As a child, she spent her summers at Camp Pinecrest, and then in 1989, she began living in a Bridgewell home.

Over the past 16 years, Leslie has been receiving residential- and clinical-support services.

Currently, she's living in one of our supported living programs, where staff is available to "assist" her in daily activities rather than "structure" her days. Leslie likes her independence. At home, she cooks, cleans and prepares and takes her medications independently. Her favorite part of the day is hanging out with other residents with whom she has formed strong friendships.

Leslie is an active participant at CHARISMA, as well as a member of the Friendship Club. She is also a board member of the Mental Health Human Rights Committee.

Leslie leads a full and active life, and one day soon, she hopes she'll be able to achieve complete independent living.

Day Rehabilitation Services

Bridgewell's rehabilitation services reflect our optimism about each person's potential and ability to grow and change in meaningful ways. Regardless of the severity of the mental illness, we believe recovery is possible.

Our programs are designed to teach coping, communication and life skills through education, training and expressive therapy.

Branwen, located in Salem, Massachusetts, emphasizes the importance of community in the healing process. In addition to life-skills education, Branwen has a strong focus on the arts and music.

CHARISMA, located in Lynn, Massachusetts, is an acronym for the Center for Healing through Assessment, Recreation, Independent Skill building and Multidisciplinary Activities. CHARISMA uses expressive therapy such as art, music and theater, as a treatment modality. The program also offers on-site vocational training and paid employment opportunities.

Community Rehabilitation Services, located in the Lowell, Massachusetts, provides intensive case management for individuals with a psychiatric disability who live in the community. The service has five key components: engaging individuals who have been resistant to treatment; case-coordination assistance for maintaining housing; general support toward rehabilitation and recovery goals; assistance with medication administration; and a representative payee program.

Lowell Adult Day Rehabilitation (LADR), located in Lowell, offers core services in social and vocational rehabilitation, occupational therapy, an addiction-support group skill-building for living independently, diverse multicultural activities, physical fitness, creative arts and community-based activities.

There are programs that specifically serve Cambodian and other Southeast Asian populations through culturally adapted and relevant group activities. Bilingual and bicultural staff members are routinely available.
